The 100th San Diego State Aztecs football team serendipitously gets to open up their own stadium for the first time in over 50 years. The schedule with both dates and home & away locations was released this week as follows.

Of course every game is crucial when it comes to College Football—especially G5 football! We at Sons of Montezuma make our presence known at each home game with tailgates and noise. At least 1 road game annually is a must too. So we took the time to rank each game in order from Worst to Best!

Take a look at each slideshow image below and click to the right to read more about each game and why we ranked them this way! Oh and get excited for the Fall of 2022!

The Worst

#12

IDAHO STATE
Saturday September 10
#12 And dead last on our list, is Idaho State. Scheduling FCS opponents is always such a drag. The only bright spot now is being able to host it at the new Snapdragon Stadium. This should certainly be the SkyShow fireworks game. In 2021, the Bengals finished a pathetic 1-10. Though Sophomore QB Hunter Hays is talented, the Bengals should be completely outmatched against a superior Aztecs team.

#11

HAWAI'I
Saturday October 8
#11 Hawai'i is a hot mess coming in to 2022. The Graham era is over but the team lost a ton of talented players. The only excitement this game brings is the return of Rainbow Warriors legend QB Timmy Chang, but as head coach. It will be interesting to see what kind of fight the Bows can bring not playing on the rock.

#10

@NEVADA
Saturday October 22
#10 is Nevada. With the departure of QB Carson Strong and head coach Jay Norvell, the Wolfpack will not nearly be as powerful as seasons past. But playing in "the Biggest little city in the world" is always tough for some reason.

#9

@NEW MEXICO
Saturday November 19
#9 New Mexico is more of an interesting game than this ranking gives it credit for. Danny Gonzales is on his 3rd season and looks to firm things up a bit more. Though the Lobos finished poorly at 3-9 overall, being the next to last game of the season against a Rocky Long defense may present itself to be a trap game.

The Interesting

#8

TOLEDO
Saturday September 24
#8 Out of conference games are always fun. We don't watch a lot of MAC-tion on the West Coast but we are in for a treat. Toledo is kind of a mystery team from a decent G5 league. The Rockets play a Top-10 ranked Ohio State team the week before visiting San Diego and may be battle tested for a real fight.

#7

SAN JOSE STATE
Saturday November 12
#7 SJSU has slowly gotten better over the years. After suffering a setback last season in the title defense, the Spartans get a jolt into their offense with the addition of Hawai'i transfer QB Chevan Cordeiro. The Aztecs get the Spartans in our new stadium, we will see what a true home field advantage can give the Aztecs!

#6

AIR FORCE
Saturday November 26
#6 Is where things get tricky. Air Force is usually not high on the exciting meter. Last season the Aztecs jumped on the Falcons early and held on late. SDSU ends their season hosting Air Force in a game that could have major MW Championship implications. Somehow the MW continues to make these cross divisional scheduling blunders. Some writers have chosen the Falcons to win the Conference this season.

#5

UNLV
Saturday November 5
#5 UNLV at home is debatable. The Rebels have not had good seasons since, well Randall Cunningham. But last year they gave everything they had against SDSU. The young team has explosiveness that can make big plays, especially at the QB spots. But will it translate into wins finally? Look for Jesse Matthews to come up big again.

The Best

#4

@FRESNO STATE
Saturday October 29
#4 on our Ranking is Fresno State. Yes this is a Revenge game. QB Jake Hainer, RB Jordan Mims and head coach Jeff Tedford are back and the Aztecs want to make the Bulldogs pay for giving them their first loss of the 2021 season. This time in the valley. The winner of this game usually finds themselves in the MW Championship game so something's gotta give!

#3

@BOISE STATE
Saturday October 1
#3 The Aztecs would play Boise State every year if they could. If there are two prgrams at the peak of the Mountain West, it's SDSU and Boise. They're also both fighting to get called up to a Power 5 level. Perhaps another win by the Aztecs on the Blue smurf turf will ease the decision of who the Big12 wants to invite first.

#2

ARIZONA
Saturday September 3
#2 might've been the toughest choice to make. Opening up the new Snapdragon Stadium with a PAC 12 opponent is a dream scenario for the Aztecs faithful. All the years of long-suffering fans and players alike, will meet at a tipping point. The cheers of the 100th team running out of the Warrior's tunnel for the 1st time will be deafening. This game is only 2nd because of the opponent and realistic implications that #1 holds.

#1

@UTAH
Saturday September 17
#1 is no doubt UTAH. A hot September Saturday of football in Salt Lake City, against a team that was seconds away from winning the Rose Bowl last year is a tough scenario to beat. The Aztecs 3OT thriller last year set the stage for an unforgettable record breaking season for SDSU. But this game will be a tougher challenge as Utah is settled in with their QB and always return top quality defenders. If SDSU can dominate the PAC-12 as they have been, look for the Aztecs to be Top-25 perhaps sooner than ever before.
