Aztecs Wrangle the Cowboys 24–7, Extending Win Streak and Taking Lead on the Mountain West

Sunday mornings are truly a blessing. A day to rest, recover, and be thankful for an exciting weekend that was. For the San Diego State Aztecs, they’ve given their fans five straight Sunday’s full of (for the most part) stress-free football. The Aztecs added onto that number and are now 7-1 having pushed that win streak to six in a row.

That means the 2025 Homecoming students and alumni woke up this Sunday with an extra hour of sleep and a first place football team in the Mountain West. Saturday evening Coach Sean Lewis’ squad took down a sneaky tough Wyoming Cowboys team 24-7. But it certainly was anything but stress-free football.

San Diego State (7-1, 4-0 MW) came in riding momentum, and left little doubt they are the team to beat in the league. They held Wyoming to just 185 total yards of offense, while posting 390 yards themselves—including 194 on the ground.

Wyoming came out early with a few big plays to punch their lone score into the end zone. But their offense never really found its footing after that. The Cowboys (4-5, 2-3 MW) committed four turnovers, and despite a strong defensive effort to keep their hopes alive, they couldn’t ever really get within striking distance to truly change things.

“Credit to Coach Lewis and their team,” said Wyoming HC Jay Sawvell, “That’s a really good football team that we played tonight. … The team that makes the least mistakes wins and we made too many mistakes tonight that gave them points and took points away from us.”

Defensively Trey White and the line pressured Wyo QB Kaden Anderson, sacking him 3 times, once by Ryan Henderson and twice by White. LB Owen Chambliss led all defenders with 13 tackles 8 solo and 1 INT. Meanwhile Bryce Phillips and Dwayne McDougal each also had 1 INT a piece.

The Aztecs’ defense came through when it mattered, turning Wyoming’s mistakes into points—some of the time. They showed they could again win ugly—grinding out yards on the ground and making timely plays. RB Lucky Sutton led all rushers on 28 carries for 158 yards and 1 TD. He was hammering Cowboys defenders all game long.

The game was in fact decided late when SDSU’s O-Line delivered a huge hole for Sutton to race out of on his way to a 50-yard TD run with 2:55 remaining.

Overall a win is a win. QB Jayden Denegal connected on 11-22 passes for 194 yards and 1 TD. However uncharacteristically he also threw for two INTs. The offense at times couldn’t take full advantage of the short fields or turnover possessions laid in front of them.

But Denegal truly showed toughness yet again when he returned to action after a brief spell by Bert Emanual Jr. Denegal was listed as questionable to start the game after taking a hit last week vs Fresno State. It will be interesting to see his week of practice leading up to the final stretch of the season.

The win gives SDSU sole possession of 1st place with a trip to Hawai’i vs the Rainbow Warriors next weekend. Following is then a return home for two games against Boise State and San Jose State, before concluding the season on the road at New Mexico.

For a team picked to finish 8-9 in conference, the Aztecs now hold their destiny in their hands.
