As reported by Pete Thamel Friday morning, SDSU made it’s first hires under the Demetrius Sumler defensive led unit. Two positional coaches were added and to fill the departed spots held by former DC Rob Aurich and Roy Manning Jr.

The first is new defensive edges coach Colin Ferrell—not this Colin Farrell. Previously defensive line coach at Rutgers for the last two seasons, Ferrell spent over a decade at Kent State as a player, coach of the defensive line, linebackers, and even serving as interim head coach in 2017.
That time line would make him the interim coach just before HC Sean Lewis was hired at Kent State. The fact Ferrell remained on staff there and worked closely with Lewis is a connection that should be a smooth addition. Similar to current SDSU RB coach Darian Hagan who was a Colorado legend and positional coach to remain with Lewis, it truly shows the quality of working environment he has built with his staffs.
Ferrell’s time at the Big Ten level with Rutgers should also provide some quality experience to draw back on at the Mesa and an expanded recruiting base stretching out to the east coast territories.
Up next is new linebackers coach Scott White. White a longtime UCLA assistant served in two different stints for the Bruins. He has held significant time there at Westwood as not only a recruiting director, but also special teams coordinator, as well as associate head coach. There he coached stars like Anthony Barr, Eric Kendricks, and Heisman candidate Myles Jack.
The addition of White, a familiar coach in the Los Angeles County area, should add a ton of insight and relationships when hitting the recruiting trail for SDSU. Not to mention White has strong San Diego tie in addition to coaching in California most of his career.
White was an excellent player at Mission Bay High school in San Diego, CA before heading to Washington to play his collegiate years. White was named CIF-San Diego Section (SDS) Defensive Player of the Year and San Diego Union-Tribune Defensive Player of the Year in 2001.
