San Diego State releases 2025 football schedule

Just when you got over watching the College Football Playoffs (You did watch it right?), the 2025 SDSU Aztecs football schedule has now been released. Let all Aztec Nation rejoice!

Okay maybe not so much. But at least we can start planning out our San Diego tailgate Saturdays and fall travel destinations.

The 2024 SDSU football campaign was a rough one for the program. After leveling the season up at 3-3 with a heroic victory on the road vs Wyoming (a game the Sons of Montezuma witnessed in person thank you very much), the Aztecs went on a dismal six game losing streak

Sean Lewis’ first season as head coach rounded out to a lowly 3-9 overall record. The only silver lining to take away from the dismal season was that the team never gave up, no matter how frustrating the results were for each game.

The reality however is that this college football thing is a results based business.

Last year SDSU with their AztecFast brand of football began the task of defining itself.

This year—2025—this is the year SDSU football begins to find itself.

Gone is true freshman starting QB Danny O’Neil to Wisconsin (Not gonna talk about it).

Gone is then active NCAA rushing leader RB Marquez Cooper to graduation (Not gonna talk about it).

The actual returning players here are the building blocks of what could be a very special defense. Notable starters DL Trey White, defensive backs Eric Butler & Chris Johnson, and LB Tano Letuli all had breakout performances last year and are primed to improve next season.

With this solid foundation of returners all the work, preparation, and experiences that go into building a football program need to find itself within whatever AztecFast aims to be. And whenever they do find themselves the program will be going in only one of two directions—either up or down.

But we have no say in that matter. What we do know is where we will be finding ourselves on game day. Thankfully the schedule is here today and we can talk about that.

Here’s our rating on the schedule, the home games and wether we will be making the road games or not.

Week-1 Home vs Stoney Brook
August 28

Here lies our annual FCS opening opponent. Hate these games. Good for an exhibition, but bad for in game attendance. To. make things worse what the heck is Thursday night football anyways?

I have no idea who Stoney Brook is to be honest. I google searched them and came up on affordable housing in Loma Alta, California residential property. So good luck in your apartment hunting folks.

The Sea Wolves (yes you read that right—what the heck is a Sea Wolf?) are out of Stoney Brook, New York. They finished the year 8-4 last year so there is some competence. Let’s hope our opening tailgate and shadeless stadium doesn’t get burnt up in the late August heat.

Week-2 at Washington State
September 6

The first road trip on the schedule is to Pullman, Washington. The El Cajon of the state of Washington. Okay maybe not that so much. Never been but I’d like to go check it out.

I think.

Last year the Cougars came into Snapdragon Stadium flying high with their dual threat QB Mateer and barely squeezed out a win against our boys and it was the most furious I’ve ever been over an Aztecs football game since the loss to Central Michigan. Which happened to be just three weeks prior—but that’s how it went down. What can I say, I’m passionate about Aztecs football.

Wazzu lost their star QB Mateeeeeer or whatever his name is and they lost their head coach too. So maybe we can return the favor on them Cougs this time.

Will we make this road trip?
MAYBE 50/50

BYE WEEK #1

Week-3 Home vs CAL
September 20

CAL brings their slightly disheveled looking, slightly ghetto, slightly nerdy selves to San Diego. Yeah I said what I said.

We went to Berkeley, California last year for the game and my description is exactly how it is. Shattuck Ave & University have some decent bars, but too many hippies around gives me the creeps.

Their old Memorial Stadium is shiddy with only port-a potties on the visitors side and their students got flagged for penalties in-game because they were too intolerant of their opponents. But hey they have great pizza at Artichokes.

CAL had a fantastic year on the gridiron however. Took coach Justin Wilcox long enough to have one, but for their first go at an ACC schedule the Golden Bears really impressed the Nation with their football spirit.

Which really sucks because I can’t stand the way they begged those Universities in the deep south to let them in and left us all out here in the West Coast hanging.

Maybe there actually is hope for the youth of America in the Bay Area. Let’s hope they bring some fun and a worthy adversary down to San Diego this September as we kick the crap out of those two-faced elitist Golden Bears.

Week-4 at Northern Illinois
September 27

We beat the crap out of the Huskies last time we played in DeKalb, Illinois back in 2016. Pumphrey gutted them across the field and the Aztecs were mighty Champions in battle.

That was then, this is now. The Aztecs are 5-0 against NIU and were undefeated against MAC teams until last year’s loss to … guess who … CENTRAL MICHIGAN. Did I tell you that game got me mad?

This game scares me. Not because it’s on the road and near Chicago, but because they know Coach Lewis’ style of play and will be extra motivated. Not sure we will be making this roadie.

Will we make this road trip?
MAYBE—BUT PROBABLY NOT.

Week-5 Home vs Colorado State
October 4

The Rams smell like doo doo, Moses Moreno told me he regrets going to CSU and Old Aggie Beer tastes like Rocky Mountain Oyster juice. Suck it Rams.

So now that I’ve got that out of my system, the Jay Norvell led Rams are a solid football team. Maybe a little too good for this 2nd year under Coach Lewis.

Which is horrible to say considering this game will feel very incestuous with former Ram, turned-Aztec, then back to Ram again WR Louis Brown IV.

SDSU should never lose to Colorado State. In anything. There I said it. And I was joking about Moses Moreno. I don’t really know him like that.

Week-6 at Nevada
October 11

I’ve always wanted to go to Reno to watch the Aztecs ever since the ‘Scared Money Don’t Make No Money’ game. That game will always live in my heart.

I want to be like that guy jumping on the chain link fence in full-on celebration mode after Adam Dingwell threw the game winning touchdown and two point conversion. That guy was living his best life.

I want to freeze my butt off sitting on aluminum benches in horrible windy conditions, while I watch my Aztecs embarrass the Wolfpack on their home turf. I want to embarrass myself by sneaking in a flask full of fireball whiskey and then blame Mike Tourtellott for it when my antics cause me to run on the field over the aforementioned chain link fence.

Nevada embarrassed us enough already by making the Aztecs their only win two years ago, in what was probably the death nail of Coach Brady Hoke’s 2nd stint back at SDSU.

Wolfpack, you got something coming your way. Tourtellott, be ready for visitors that weekend sir.

Will we make this road trip?
ABSOLUTELY.

BYE WEEK (AGAIN).

This year we get a second bye week in lue of playing Hawaii. So this one here is a good chance to break up those two conference road games in October. And to get your Halloween costumes ready.

Week-7 at Fresno State
October 25

2024 was the year everything came to light. It was an election year. Diddy got busted. In his mansion they found over 1,000 bottles of oil. The San Diego State vs Fresno State annual rivalry game for the ‘Old Oyl Can’ mysteriously did not take place either. It ended a streak of 12 years.

Coincidence? Maybe not.

Well it’s a new year and it’s time to get oyled-up for this one. The Aztecs and Bulldogs are back! But you won’t catch us making this road trip, no way—no how.

Last time, at a road game in Fresno they stuck our tailgate party out in the fields near the livestock and it reeked of cow manure and chicken feed. Besides we all know what goes on out there near the sheep den.

It’s going to be a memorable game no doubt. These barn burners always are. But I’d rather not be in this environment ever again.

Will we make this road trip?
NOT A CHANCE.

Week-8 Home vs Wyoming
November 1

The Pokes gave us a wonderful road trip last season in what likely will be the last time SDSU plays in Laramie. Other than giving them one last free trip to San Diego I feel nothing for this game and will be glad this is the last of it. Get me out of this conference.

Week-9 at Hawaii
November 8

This one’s bittersweet. Hawaii has been good to SDSU. Other than the one time they defeated the Aztecs on the last game of the season to advance to the Mountain West Championship game—I have nothing bad to say about the Rainbows. We usually win anyways.

The last few games have been very-very tight against coach Timmy Chang’s team and they are a much better opponent at home on the islands. This will likely be the last chance to watch Aztecs football play in Hawaii, but it shouldn’t be.

Gone is the Aloha Bowl and now the Rainbows have been slogging through their games on campus in the tiny TC Ching Athletics Complex. Not exactly a helpful facility when it comes to recruiting.

Either way I’m excited to checking out this bare bones football field and the rest of the campus. And of course seeing our buddies over at the Hawaii Sports Fans–Rainbow Wrap-Up Podcast. They are definitely worth checking out even for an opposing fan like myself.

Hopefully something opens up in the Pac-12 to make room for these guys to join us because no body deserves quality athletics like the good folks down there at UH. And we all deserve to visit the islands for sporting events being here on the West Coast.

Will we make this road trip?
PARADISE HERE WE COME.

Week-10 Home vs Boise State
November 15

The game that comes around to remind us all just how much our team sucks or kicks ass. Lately it’s been a lot sucking.

Gone is Heisman Trophy runner-up Ashton Jeanty. Gone is completely over-qualified offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter. Here still is the team in blue that always has standout high school players from Southern California on their roster.

Makes me sick.

I want to vomit every time I see a San Diego prep star lining up on that ugly blue turf. I equally want to vomit when I see their friends & family filling our glorious stadium’s seats.

By November 15, SDSU should have a good enough idea if they’ll need to add any more promotions to entice ticket sales for this one. Or if the stadium will be littered with Napoleon Dynamite dopple-gangers and all his friends.

Week-11 Home vs San Jose State
November 22

Funny to think about it but this game against our other California State peer also didn’t take place last year. But did anyone even notice? San Jose has been solid the last few years and last time around it took all the Aztecs could give to get past these Spartans.

Back to back home games against Mountain West foes in mid November ain’t too bad. By the time this game comes around we will know if this Aztecs team will have any juice to them or if this game will be a stinker.

Week-12 at New Mexico
November 29

Bronco Mendenhall the popular BYU head coach from 2005-2015 led an impressive 2024 Lobos team by actually making them very respectable. It was a job that hadn’t been accomplished since the ‘ol ball coach did it back in 1998-2008.

After just one season as head coach of the Lobos, Bronco packed up his bags, got the hell out of ABQ and drove back up to Mormon country as quick as he could to take over Utah State’s wreck of a job.

Sick burn Bronco. Them Ladder-day Saints love them some Bronco.

But the Lobos hired Jason Eck former head man at Idaho. Surprisingly another pretty good hire for UNM. Not used to this.

By this final game of the year we will learn a whole lot about this Aztecs football program. The game could be in play for an Aztecs bowl position, or it will be a more accurate litmus test on where this program finds itself. Either way you bet your bottom dollar it will be a very important one to pay attention to.

Will we make this road trip?
ABQ AIN’T BAD—BUT WILL HAVE TO TAKE A MIRACLE.
