Ahhh lookie here … ugh … boy lookie here …
I feel a whoop coming on … a whoop coming on …
Are you singing? Cause I’m singing.
The Aztecs this week received official commitments from coveted transfer guard Latrell Davis and now a four star high school standout wing player, Elzie Harrington.
Now slide with it … slide with it …
I am dancing now. Am I showing my age?
Allow me to explain my excitement.
Elzie Harrington is a 6-foot-5, 180-pound combo guard from St. John Bosco High School in Bellflower, California. A four-star recruit, Elzie’s been ranked as high as No. 133 overall nationally by ESPN, No. 68 in the 247Sports composite rankings, and 33rd at his position.
For those keeping score at home, this makes Elzie SDSU’s highest-rated recruit during the Brian Dutcher Era.
Harrington initially committed to Harvard in June 2024—so he’s definitely a smart cookie. He then flipped his commitment to USC in December, in order to be closer to home.
After a few short months he then de-committed from USC just this April. With his recruitment reopened, San Diego State emerged as the leading contender for his commitment. Again, the young man just continues to show how smart he is.
But seriously, Harrington is a versatile guard truly known for his high basketball IQ. His composure on the court sets himself apart from many other prep stars.
He excels in half-court settings, demonstrating strong ball-handling skills and the ability to create scoring opportunities for himself and teammates.
The makeup of his offensive game includes effective mid-range shooting, finishing through contact at the rim, and a reliable three-point shot, with a career average of 35% from beyond the arc.
Defensively, he utilizes his length and being in the right position to disrupt opposing players and has shown potential as an off-ball defender as well.
Style & Strengths
At 6’5″, Harrington’s size allows him to guard multiple positions and contribute offensively as both a scorer and facilitator. He possesses excellent passing abilities, often creating opportunities in pick-and-roll situations and transition plays.
As mentioned his calm demeanor, rarely appearing rushed, really jumps off the screen of his highlights for being smooth and contributes to his effectiveness in high-pressure situations.
Weaknesses and Areas for Improvement
While skilled beyond his age, one knock against Harrington is the lack of elite quickness. This may limit his ability to blow by defenders at the next level. While on defense, it may affect his matchups against faster guards early on. Improving consistency in his shooting and really digging into the Aztecs defensive concepts & positioning will be key to maximizing his potential at the collegiate level.
Elzie’s Fit With This STACKED San Diego State Roster
As we all know San Diego State is known for its defensive intensity and discipline—so Harrington’s size and defensive capabilities align well with the team’s philosophy. Offensively, his ability to handle the ball and create plays would add depth to the Aztecs’ backcourt.
But the big question is how will he fit in this program right now. With potential departures of key players like Miles Byrd and Magoon Gwath, Harrington could fill a significant role, contributing both as a starter and a versatile option off the bench.
As for the future, sliding into a much pivotal role is certainly on the horizon next season .
No matter how early his play expands in the program, Elzie Harrington’s skill set and versatility make him a valuable prospect for SDSU. His development and consistency will determine his impact at the collegiate level, but his current abilities suggest he could be a strong contributor to the Aztecs’ program.
