Many Aztecs fans wondered if Marshall Faulk would ever join the SDSU staff as a coach, administrator, or more in his time after being a player in the NFL. After one season on the Colorado University staff under HC Deion Sanders, San Diego State legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk has been officially named the 22nd head football coach at Southern University.

This marks his first-ever head coaching position in the collegiate ranks.

Following a difficult 1–10 season this hire really reflects the university’s desire to inject star talent and credibility into its football program. Faulk brings all of that and comes with some coaching experience after spending the entire 2025 season at Colorado as part of Deion Sanders’ staff.

Faulk, 52, signed a three-year contract with an option for extension, signaling Southern’s commitment to building stability and success under his leadership. The specific financial terms have not been publicly disclosed, but the multi-year agreement shows the school has confidence in Faulk’s ability to transform the program.

In his time, Marshall was a three-time first-team All-American, two-time unanimous All-American and a three-time Heisman Trophy finalist, rewriting school and NCAA records with his explosive play.

In the NFL he earned the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Award, was a seven-time Pro Bowl selection, a three-time NFL Offensive Player of the Year, and won the NFL MVP Award in 2000, the same year he helped lead the Rams to victory in Super Bowl XXXIV.

Faulk stressed his immediate goal of revitalizing the Jaguars’ football culture and returning Southern to competitiveness in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Mostly he spoke about instilling a winning mindset, developing student-athletes on and off the field, and building a program that can compete for conference titles, signaling that his focus will be on long-term growth and sustained success.

Of all things this career decision is a lot more of a homecoming for Faulk than a return to San Diego State. The Louisiana native should make a pretty sizable impact not only on the field, but in the community and in the players lives off the field.

What do you think of Faulk’s new position as head coach? Let us know in the comments and should San Diego State schedule a home and home with the Southern Jaguars team.
