San Diego State pulled away in the second half to secure an 81–68 road victory over San Jose State on Tuesday night, to secure their 2nd Mountain West victory with a solid and workmanlike performance.
The Aztecs leaned on their physicality and depth to wear down the Spartans after a competitive first half that saw San Jose State commit numerous turnovers. But Tim Miles’ team would settle in and give the Aztecs a run for their money.
SDSU was led by BJ Davis, who finished with a game-high 18 points on 7/10 shooting and the Aztecs controlled the paint on both ends of the floor with a 44-22 points in the paint advantage.
The Aztecs also received a strong supporting effort from Miles Byrd, who added 11 points while setting the tone defensively, and Pharoah Compton, who chipped in 11 points of timely scoring and 5/6 free throws, as San Diego State built separation.
For San Jose State, guard Colby Garland put up a huge 30 points and got to the line for 14/14 free throws. Meanwhile Melvin Bell Jr. added 13 points and kept SJSU within striking distance for much of the night.
After San Jose State would cut the deficit and take a short lead in the 2nd half, the Aztecs responded with a surge that pushed the lead to double figures, forcing the Spartans into rushed shots and turnovers.
SDSU’s ability to convert those mistakes into points effectively shifted control of the game. When the Spartans began to pressure full court, the Aztecs were able to break down the defense with ease and continue to separate themselves towards a decisive victory.
Overall, the Aztecs showcased the culture that have defined them under head coach Brian Dutcher: disciplined defense, rebounding toughness, and timely offense.
While San Jose State competed hard and showed flashes offensively, San Diego State’s consistency and poise proved too much over 40 minutes, allowing the Aztecs to close out a comfortable conference win and build early momentum in Mountain West play.

As you said, Garland was outstanding. I had never heard of him before tonight. I bet the rest of the conference is now aware of this guy. Can he keep playing like that, or was this a one-off?
