Colorado ended last season at 17-16 showing mild improvement from 2025’s 14-21 season. Entering his 20th overall season as a collegiate head coach, Tad Boyle is Colorado’s all-time leader in men’s basketball coaching wins and second in win percentage.
Sophomore guard Josiah Sanders returns as a focal point of the Buffs planned success in 2026 and with some additions to the program it will be a solid opponent for Brian Dutcher’s Aztecs.
As reported by SDUT’s Mark Zeigler, Boyle has had several 20-win teams but never reached the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament. SDSU missed the big dance altogether last season and lost in the play-in game a year prior to that.
To some this may seem like an underwhelming out of conference addition to the schedule for an SDSU program just three seasons removed from a National Championship appearance. However when mixing in the already challenging out of conference opponents the Aztecs will face in the PlayersEra Festival on Thanksgiving week in Las Vegas, this may be the best kind of matchup SDSU needs.
The Bill Walton Classic presents itself as a celebration of college basketball in San Diego. For the Buffs to make the road trip and play in a road game environment against the hometown Aztecs is a true sign SDSU has demanded the respect.
Leading up to the PlayersEra slate of games, it’s very important Dutcher and his crew have the team face legitimate opponents, but not overload themselves out of the gate. Wins are wins and not always easy to come by. The Buffs will present just the kind of competition the Aztecs team will need to prepare them.
With so many new players to the roster, the Aztecs will have their hands full creating cohesion with teammates on and off the court. Several overseas players have yet to touch down on American soil this year as they make the transition from the Euro leagues to college ball in the states.
Essentially when the team does get together it will be a matter of months to build those bonds, learn playing styles, and develop clear roles that will lead to success come game time.
While the women’s game between UCSD vs USD should be applauded for the outreach into the sport, it will be interesting to see how San Diego sports fans react to the two game bill set at this price range. As of now the tickets for this important matchup at Pechanga Arena are officially starting at $80. We will have to keep an eye on that progress as things develop.
