It’s the day before the big game. San Diego State hosts their first ever Pac-12 conference match against Texas State. It has been one crazy week leading up to it all. The injuries, the lackluster play, the mumps. All of it has been a distraction against just plain old, good football.
Texas State as of now are nearly 9 point favorites on the road. It’s not hard to blame the oddsmakers. So now we take a quick look to conclude what the keys are for each side to come out of Saturday with a victory.
San Diego State Will Win If They Do This…
1. Establish the Run Game?
SDSU would normally need to lean on Javion Kinnard and their offensive line to set the tone early. Control the clock, win the trenches, and keep Texas State’s offense off the field.
But with Lucky Sutton already ruled out, Kinnard is also doubtful on the PAC-12 availability updates. A productive rushing attack will take pressure off Jayden Denegal and open up play-action opportunities. This game however is all about pressure with those running backs not available.
With two freshman RBs as the next mn up, it’s all about the gameplan of throw Denegal, throw and throw and throw some more.
2. Limit Texas State’s Explosive Plays
The Aztecs need to stay disciplined defensively and avoid giviNg the Bobcats easy chunk gains. Win first down, tackle well in space, and force third-and-long situations to keep Texas State from finding an offensive rhythm.
3. Take Advantage of Home Field
Texas State is also 1-2 after losses to Texas and UTSA, but its 49-35 win over North Texas showed its offense can put up points. SDSU needs to use Snapdragon Stadium to its advantage, start fast, build confidence, and avoid letting the Bobcats dictate the tempo.
Texas State Will Win If They Do This…
1. Control the Line of Scrimmage
SDSU can’t afford to get pushed around up front. Texas State actually has a fantastic rushing attack despite their QB1 Brad Jackson receiving the majority of the offensive notoriety. If the Bobcats can win first downs, and dictate the tempo with sustained drives, they may run away with this thing.
2. Squash the Aztecs Offensive Possessions
Against a competitive opponent, stalled drives, turnovers, and missed scoring opportunities can quickly become costly. Texas State needs to avoid putting unnecessary pressure on its defense by repeatedly coming away empty-handed.
3. Explosive Plays
Texas State can make opponents pay for missed tackles, blown coverages, and defensive breakdowns. After SDSU’s recent struggles against UCLA, JMU and Toledo, the defense needs to avoid giving the Bobcats easy opportunities to build momentum.
