The Aztecs clinched their craziest win in recent history last Saturday. Now, in their first Pac-12 road game they head to Corvalis to face Oregon State whose passing attack is one of the NCAA’s most explosive right now.

Corvallis, OR — The SDSU Aztecs (2-3, 1-0 Pac-12) meet the Oregon State Beavers (3-2, 1-0 Pac-12) in the Aztecs’ first Pac-12 road game of the season. Both teams won their conference openers last week, but in very different ways. SDSU rallied from a 14-point halftime deficit to beat Texas State 31-29, tied for the fourth-largest second-half comeback win in the program’s Division I history. Oregon State, meanwhile, dropped 56 points on Colorado State in Fort Collins, outscoring the Rams 42-12 after they had tied the game at 14 in the second quarter.
History is not on SDSU’s side in this series. The Aztecs won the first two meetings, in 1972 in San Diego and in 1975 in Corvallis, but Oregon State has won five straight since 2000. The 21-0 win in 2024 was also the last shutout recorded by the Beavers. SDSU has not beaten Oregon State since that 1975 game in Corvallis.
Now, let’s take a closer look at Oregon State.
Get to Know the 2026 Beavers
Oregon State is in its first season under head coach JaMarcus Shephard. Before Corvallis, he spent two seasons at Alabama as assistant head coach, co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach. He is known as one of the best wide receiver developers in the country, with stops at Alabama, Washington, Purdue, Washington State and Western Kentucky.
He coached in the 2023 national title game with Washington, where the Huskies’ passing offense ranked second in the country. Mike MacIntyre, the former Colorado head coach, runs the defense in his first year as coordinator.

The Beavers had a rough start. They opened at No. 23 Houston and lost 33-20, then fell 35-24 to Texas Tech in their home opener. Since then, Oregon State has taken off. The Beavers routed Montana and UTEP, then won at Colorado State for their first three-game winning streak since 2023. They won their last three games by a combined score of 141-50. Oregon State is also 5-0 against the spread this season.
Offensive Leaders
Sophomore quarterback Braden Atkinson, a transfer from Mercer, drives the offense. He won the Jerry Rice Award last season, given to the top freshman in FCS, and against Colorado State he completed 31 of 34 passes for 428 yards and five touchdowns with no interceptions. He completed his first 16 passes of that game, breaking a school record that had stood since 1989.
For the season, Atkinson has 1,851 passing yards, an average of 371.1 per game, and 16 touchdowns, two more than the entire 2025 Beavers team threw over 12 games.

His top target is true freshman wide receiver Jesse Legree, who is having a historic start. Legree leads the Pac-12 with 741 receiving yards and has nine touchdowns. He has gone over 100 yards in all five games, which ties Mike Hass and Brandin Cooks for the longest streak in school history.
According to Opta, the only other FBS players with nine or more receiving touchdowns in their first five career games are Michael Crabtree and Randy Moss. Senior tight end Eric Olsen gives Atkinson a reliable underneath option. He had nine catches and two touchdowns at Colorado State, and AJ Newberry led the ground game with 90 yards on 15 carries.
Overall, Oregon State has the best passing offense in the nation at 377.6 yards per game and ranks ninth in total offense at 497.2. The Beavers have also scored on 20 of 21 red zone trips, and the only miss was a kneel-down at the end of the Colorado State game.
Defensive Standouts
The Beaver defense is built around edge rusher Takari Hickle. He has at least one tackle for loss in nine straight games, and his 7.5 TFLs and 3.5 sacks both lead the Pac-12 this season. Oregon State’s defense has also been good early in games.
Opponents have failed to score on their opening drive in four straight games. Senior linebackers Aiden Sullivan and Gyriece Goodman came up with back-to-back stops on third and fourth down on Colorado State’s first drive.
The weakness is the run defense. The Rams ran for 188 yards on 29 carries, an average of 6.5 yards per rush. That’s an opening for an Aztec offense that wants to lean on its running backs.
Your 2026 Pac-12 Aztecs
The Texas State win was one of the most improbable in SDSU history. The Aztecs were outgained 565-239 and lost the time of possession battle by more than 20 minutes, but they finished plus-two in turnovers and plus-19 in average starting field position, and they scored two non-offensive touchdowns.
Redshirt freshman Jaylon Hawkins returned the opening kickoff of the second half 96 yards for a touchdown, and Cameron Cooper put the game away with a 32-yard interception return for a touchdown. SDSU became only the sixth team in the last 30 years to win a game after being outgained by at least 300 yards.
Health is still the biggest storyline. The team was dealing with a mumps outbreak along with multiple injuries last week. There has been no update on Lucky Sutton, who aggravated a high ankle sprain at Toledo, or on Javion Kinnard, who left that same game with an apparent left knee injury. SDSU played with its third-string center against Texas State, and it has now started four different offensive line combinations in five games.
Key Offensive Players
The next-man-up approach produced a new star. True freshman Josiah Lucas started the season fifth on the depth chart. Against Texas State he ran for 111 yards and two touchdowns, the first 100-yard game by an Aztec true freshman since Donnel Pumphrey in 2013.
QB1 Jayden Denegal needs to manage the game. He is 11-6 as a starter and has completed 71 of 122 passes this season for 709 yards, five touchdowns and five interceptions. Nathan Acevedo leads the receivers with 16 catches for 177 yards and two touchdowns.
Slow starts have been the biggest problem. The Aztecs have not scored a first-half touchdown in four straight games, totaling just six first-half points in that span.
Key Defensive Players
The defense posted season highs of nine tackles for loss and three sacks against Texas State. Gavriel Lightfoot had a career-high 12 tackles, Djibril Rahman had 3.5 tackles for loss and a sack, and true freshman Alijah Lash added two sacks. Sione Hala leads the Pac-12 with 48 tackles.
Cooper had a big night beyond the pick-six. He also blocked a field goal in the second quarter. The concern is the secondary. Brad Jackson threw for 372 yards, and Beau Sparks had 10 catches for 153 yards. Now the Aztecs face an even better passing attack.

Keys to a San Diego State Victory
1. Coat Legree in Secondary Sauce
Oregon State’s entire passing game runs through freshman superstar Legree. His 50-yard touchdown on the Beavers’ first possession at Colorado State came when he slipped between two defensive backs. The Aztecs CAN NOT let that happen. Bracket him, keep a safety over the top, and make Atkinson beat SDSU with Olsen and the underneath throws. Disrupt Legree and de-claw Oregon State’s pass attack.
2. Run the Ball and Shorten the Game
The Rams showed SDSU how to attack this defense, averaging 6.5 yards per carry. Whether it’s Lucas, Sutton or Kinnard (whomever is healthy), SDSU has to win on the ground, convert on third down and keep Atkinson on the sideline. The Aztecs went just 1-for-10 on third down against Texas State, and they have to do far better than that at Oregon State.
3. Find Hidden Yardage- Again
SDSU won last week on special teams and turnovers, and it will likely need the same formula in Corvallis. The Aztecs are 25-4 since 2020 when they win the turnover battle. Another big return from Hawkins, or a takeaway on one of Atkinson’s few mistakes, could keep this game close into the fourth quarter.
Prediction
This is the toughest test of the season for the Aztec secondary, and the line reflects that. ESPN’s matchup predictor gives SDSU just a 21.1 percent chance to win- which suggests victory isn’t out of reach. Oregon State’s offense is the real deal.
Reser Stadium will be loud for the home return. Still: SDSU’s defense holds most of its opponents below their scoring averages, and the Beaver run defense gives the Aztecs a path to control the clock. Expect SDSU to keep it closer than Vegas thinks, but until their top running backs are healthy, it will be hard to see the Aztecs keeping pace for four quarters.
Final Score
Oregon State 31, San Diego State 24
