3 Keys for an Aztecs Victory—3 Keys for a Rams Victory

San Diego State goes for their first road win of the season and they’ll have to do it at altitude vs Colorado State. The Rams have lost four straight games and have done so allowing huge scoring performances. Something has to give, but the Rams may have had enough.

Last weekend saw the Aztecs fight to the end and pull out the win against their rivals, Fresno State. It was an emotional high and they earned every bit of it. But does that affect them negatively now facing an struggling opponent with really no emotional tie towards?

The Rams as mentioned are in a dismal stretch with their latest drubbing coming at the hands of Texas State last weekend. They’ve made staff changes and offensively they’ve stayed solid despite injuries. The same cannot be said for SDSU in that situation.

Does all this make for an interesting game? We think so. SDSU is a mystery as to who will start at QB—but regardless they need to score points against this dysfunctional Rams defense.

The challenge is inverted for Jim Mora’s team, their defense needs to take advantage of a bottom of the barrel Aztecs offense. It’s a fascinating situation for both teams and we have some thoughts for how each can come away with the victory.

San Diego State Will Win If They Do This…

1. Establish Lucky Sutton and dominate the ground game

Sutton returned from an injury to rush for 110 yards on 18 carries against Fresno State, while Javion Kinnard added 77 yards. SDSU finished with 204 rushing yards in the rivalry victory.

2. Pressure Colorado State and create defensive stops

The Aztecs recorded a season-high six sacks against Fresno State, with Kai Wallin getting three. SDSU also held the Bulldogs to just 276 total yards.

3. Exploit Colorado State’s Defensive Struggles

Colorado State has allowed 50 or more points in three consecutive games, including 66 points and 716 total yards against Texas State. The Rams’ defense has struggled to stop the run, giving SDSU a chance to build on its recent offensive improvement.

Coloado State Will Win If They Do This…

1. If SDSU Can’t Keep the Rams Offense Off the Field

Colorado State can put points on the board, and its offense has been productive despite its losing record. SDSU cannot afford to give up explosive plays or let the Rams establish the run and dictate the tempo.

A Rams ball control offense will get the Aztecs huffin & puffin in the thin Rocky Mountain Air.

2. Injuries Derail the SDSU Offense

SDSU’s injury concerns include quarterback Jayden Denegal, listed as questionable, and several wide receivers with uncertain availability. Lucky Sutton also dealt with an ankle injury before the Fresno State game, although he returned to rush for 110 yards in that win.

3. SDSU Assumes Colorado State’s Losing Record Makes This Easy

The Rams have lost four straight, including consecutive blowout losses to Oregon State (56–26) and Texas State (66–27). However, their offense has still shown it can score, and quarterback Hauss Hejny returned to practice and is expected to start.
