Neither Stone Saunders 2nd start at QB1 nor Washington State’s loss to Boise State last weekend moved the needle much ahead of this Saturday’s matchup between the Aztecs and the Cougars.
San Diego State is 3-5 in their overall record and 2-6 against the spread this season. The Aztecs were slight favorites on the road last weekend and they dropped the ball when they lost to Colorado State. So far SDSU is winless when favorited to win this season, minus their home opener vs FCS Portland State back in September.
Washington State is 1-7 this season and still searching for their first PAC-12 victory in 2026. With their 31-10 loss last Saturday, the Cougars are having as bad of a season as ever with their lone victory coming against FCS Duquesne 48-7 at home.
San Diego State has had their struggles with injuries, regression and off the field illnesses. However, their 2-2 conference record still gives them a puncher’s chance at finishing strong.
The Aztecs are 1-3 all-time at Washington State. After splitting the first two matchups in 2007 and 2011, the Cougars have won the last two games over the Aztecs in 2024 and 2025. Despite their head to head success, Washington State finds themselves in the middle of a five game losing streak this season.
This should be the game SDSU will be counted on to come out victorious in—but would history prove to be just the matchup to get the Cougars back on track?
If so, the heat will fall square down on the SDSU program as Washington State has been in a free fall of issues with a first year head coach and massive turnover of their roster the last few seasons.
San Diego State and Washington State kick off at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, and CBS Sports will televise the game.
