SDSU en ESPAÑOL!
SDSU has been playing football since the 1920’s. Yet, two weeks ago when the Aztecs hosted the Hawai’i Rainbow Warriors marked the FIRST time in school history there had been a Spanish language broadcast of a football game.
The broadcast was available on goaztecs.com and the SDSU Athletics app.The 1st Spanish broadcast of an Aztecs football game was a great addition to SDSU coverage! But why has it taken so long?
San Diego, California at the nation’s southwestern edge, is a true border city—and one of the largest in the country at that. Tijuana, Mexico in the state of Baja California is a humongous front entrance to a nation that is crazed with American football fans.
According to Forbes, American football is now Mexico’s 2nd largest favorite sport. With hard hitting action, exciting acrobatic pass & catches, the spectacular entertainment of the game has been ramped up by many NFL outreaches to the Mexican fans the past several years.
It’s no wonder the game has caught fire in Mexico exactly how Mexican food has taken over the taste buds of much of America. From California to New York, to even down south, you will find guacamole dip, tacos, burritos, nachos, even hot cheetos at most football watch party gatherings.
Bottom line, Mexican culture LOVES American football.
With a name like the Aztecs, SDSU has represented a large part of that Mexican culture for decades using iconography, names, chants, and historical educational practices on campus and beyond. Why not tether that with athletics?
That’s exactly what we hope to have happen at the Sons of Montezuma media network, as the creation of our HIJOS DE Montezuma podcast planted the seed to reach as many Spanish language listeners as possible.

The SDSU Aztecs brand of sports must be the preeminent leader in Southern California and the Nation of Mexico. Anything less, would be irresponsible and tone deaf.
Tony Alvarez of Televisa in Tijuana was the perfect choice to deliver this first broadcast of Aztecs football. Tony has worked in capacity’s ranging from Tijuana’s futbol scene to San Diego’s professional football ranks with the Chargers.
Special thanks to Tony Alvarez or joining our HIJOS DE Montezuma show as part of the Sons of Montezuma media network and sharing his experiences doing the play by play!
The Spanish broadcast was made possible thanks to SDSU and 760 San Diego Sports, Tony did an excellent job. Hopefully more to come in the future growth of SDSU athletics in our region as a bi-national University.
