Breaking news Thursday afternoon that San Diego State freshman QB Danny O’Neil had entered the transfer portal was reported by On3’s Steve Wiltfong.

The freshman O’Neil becomes the 13th player to enter the portal from San Diego State this off season according to 247sports.com.
Head coach Sean Lewis who brought O’Neil along from his previous recruitment & commitment at the University of Colorado, was the key figure in revamping an AztecsFast offense. Seemingly mutually committed to each other’s growth & development at SDSU, the news was greeted by many as a shock.
On the season O’Neil threw for 2,181 yards, 12 touchdowns and 6 INTs. The Aztecs offense struggled at times on their way to a 3-9 overall record but appeared focused on building with O’Neil towards the future.
Having just undergone shoulder surgery on his non throwing arm, O’Neil’s recovery at worse case scenario had a possibility delaying his full participation in SDSU’s 2025 Spring ball.
O’Neil becomes the 3rd QB position player to enter into the portal this off season along with teammates AJ Duffy and Javance Tupuata-Johnson. The only remaining QB left on the roster currently are Kyle Crum entering his Junior season, and newly signed true freshman JP Mialovski.
Sons of Montezuma, who holds an NIL contractual agreement with Danny O’Neil, reached out for confirmation directly but have not received comment at this moment. More developments to come as we learn more about this report.
