San Diego, CA– The SDSU Aztecs (6-1, 3-0 MW) host the Wyoming Cowboys (4-4, 2-2 MW) for the first time since 2019 in one final Mountain West conference match. What’s expected to be a well-attended Saturday homecoming game, the Cowboys have their work cut out for them against an Aztecs team that are exceeding all expectations this season.

Both Aztecs and Cowboys shut out their opponents last week, as a testimony to their stout defenses. SDSU shut down Fresno State 23-0 on the road in front of a sold-out blackout crowd. Wyoming hosted Colorado State and hammered the Rams 28-0. A shutout indicates defense is on point, so Sean Lewis and co. will have to be prepared.

Now, let’s take a closer look at Wyoming.

Get to Know the 2025 Cowboys

Wyoming head coach Jay Sawvel succeeded Craig Bohl following the Barstool Sports Arizona Bowl on December 30, 2023, where the Cowboys bested Toledo 16-15. Bohl retired on a high note after 10 seasons, giving the Cowboys one of their best runs in program history.

Sawvel became Wyoming’s 33rd head coach in 2024 after four seasons serving as Bohl’s defensive coordinator and safeties coach.  Sawvel is a true defenseman at heart, and his Cowboys have several specialties, including turnover recoveries.

The Cowboys opened 2025 with two wins over Akron and Northern Iowa before incurring three straight losses against Utah, Colorado and UNLV. They then beat San Jose State before a close 24-21 road loss at Air Force (2-5), where their defense allowed 331 rushing yards (5.7 ypc), 19 first downs and no takeaways. The bright spot was that Wyoming’s offense produced 409 yards with 6.2 yards per play and 25 first downs in the road loss. Two costly interceptions, however, sealed the Cowboys’ fate against the Falcons.

In last weekend’s home game against Colorado State the Cowboys waged a 21-0 lead by halftime. Wyoming tacked on another touchdown in the third quarter and then shut out the Rams 28-0. QB1 Kaden Anderson went 16 of 24 for 154 yards, with two touchdowns and no interceptions while leading rusher Sam Scott had three carries for 68 yards (22.7 ypc) and a score of his own.

Wyoming showed a dominant ground game, rushing for 213 yards compared to Colorado State’s 94 yards. Leading receiver Chris Durr Jr. had seven completions for 67 yards and a touchdown. On defense the Cowboys forced three interceptions in the shutout and ultimately took back the Bronze Boot trophy.

On offense, Anderson leads Wyoming this season with 1,634 yards and 11 scores on 146 completions. Samuel Harris is the team’s top running back with 430 yards and a touchdown on 76 carries. Sam Scott has also completed 68 carries for 346 yards and two scores, and Terron Kellman has contributed 50 carries for 302 yards and four scores. Durr Jr. leads the team with 398 yards and four scores on 37 receptions.

Wyoming’s balanced offense ranks 81st in passing yards and 58th in rushing yards. The team, however, has several key players out due to injuries which could impact their performance in games to come.

The Aztecs with Five Straight Wins

Aside from a 36-13 road loss at Washington State, the Aztecs have won six matches. The victories came courtesy of Stony Brook, Cal, Northern Illinois, Colorado State, Nevada and Fresno State. In the win over the Wolf Pack on October 11, SDSU held Nevada to just 254 total yards, 77 rush yards, 15 first downs and 4-of-15 on third-down tries along with two interceptions. The offense gained 409 total yards but went just 3-of-10 on third downs.

At Fresno State last weekend, QB1 Jayden Denegal had 124 yards on 11-of-19 passing (57.9%) for the Aztecs with no touchdowns and one interception. He also carried the ball eight times for 30 yards. Lucky Sutton carried the ball 21 times for 131 yards (6.2 yards per carry) with one touchdown on the ground. Byron Cardwell had 59 yards on two catches (29.5 per reception) in that game.

Denegal leads San Diego State this season with 1221 yards and seven touchdowns on 94 completions. Running back Sutton is the top ball carrier on the roster with 662 yards and seven touchdowns on 126 carries. Cardwell has 39 carries for 228 yards and one score. Jordan Napier leads the team with 567 yards and two scores on 41 receptions. Jacob Bostick has added 11 catches for 157 yards and three touchdowns on the season.

Keys to a San Diego State Victory

1. Win The Battle Of The Running Backs

The Aztecs should again look to exceed 200 yards in the ground game. On the other end of the field, the Cowboys have three steady tailbacks in Harris, Scott and Kellman, who combined ran for 213 yards in their dominant shutout against the Rams.  The Aztecs want to hold the Cowboys to under 150 yards. The Cowboys are dominant defensively, so the Aztecs’ run game will be aggressively contested. The Aztecs will need to out-run the Cowboys to prevail in Saturday’s match.

2. Picks-And-Strips Prevention

In the NCAA, Wyoming is ranked 17th in sacks.  They are 8th in interceptions. They are strong in fumbles recovered.  Wyoming’s defense will burdensome for the Aztecs. Their turnover success is undoubtedly the result of aggressive quarterback hurries. The Aztecs must keep the ball secure, being very mindful of Wyoming’s turnover talent.

3. Agitate Anderson

QB1 Kaden Anderson has been passing precisely during the last two games. In that time, he has completed 74 percent of passes going 39-of-54 with three touchdowns. The Aztecs defense will have to penetrate Wyoming’s strong defense to disrupt decrease Anderson’s completion rate. A hurried, agitated Anderson will give the Cowboys a taste of their own medicine and lead to mistakes that the Aztecs can then capitalize on.

Prediction

The Aztecs and Cowboys are the Mountain West’s top defenses. For the first time ever, two MW opponents square off after respective shutouts. Both defenses will make scoring hard, so this probably won’t be a high scoring game.

While both teams enter Saturday’s match with earned tempo, the Aztecs will have huge momentum on SDSU’s homecoming night before a packed fan base. The Aztecs will have the upper hand, playing dominantly this season at home.

SDSU will wage victory in front of a packed crowd at Snapdragon Stadium.

FINAL SCORE

San Diego State 20, Wyoming 9
