SDSU Transfer Portal Tracker: Trey White to Texas Tech, Chambliss to Nebraska; and the dark side of the portal

Below we give the official list of who is transferring out of the SDSU program, as compiled through 247.com and individual players announcements via social media most times.

Trey White

So before we get into it all, a pretty quick turnaround time on former SDSU defensive edge Trey White’s decision was made. The Eastlake High alum has chosen to commit to Texas Tech and become a Red Raider.

The young man spent several very fine years in the red & black and this is a big signing for HC Joey McGuire now entering into his 5th season. White the 53rd overall player in the transfer portal joins a team that was stacked defensively this past year and is losing a few seniors to graduation.

For Texas Tech, the College Football Playoff was an achievement made that they are hoping to repeat next season. The first time CFP participants were shut out against Oregon 23-0 in a very grind it out type of game.

But with tons of NIL revenue to offer thanks to former player and billionaire Cody Campbell, the Red Raiders are adding Trey to bridge the gap between their departing defensive players.

White who can be a big disruptor on the field and a positive impact guy in the locker room, has a chance to be a difference maker for Tech. Question is will they have the offense that can perform in the CFP this time, to match the defensive caliber they put forth this past season.

Owen Chambliss

Following soon after, Owen Chambliss has officially committed to Nebraska as made public just minutes ago. The linebacker follows his DC at SDSU on the way to Lincoln Nebraska and the Big Ten conference.

This is my opinion was a great decision out of the many for the young man. If any school needs his services at linebacker it is the Cornhuskers. Chambliss will know what the expectations are for him there with Rob Aurich and the both will truly benefit each other in this big transition.

If you ask me, Aurich needed Chambliss more than the other way around. Aurich is taking over a very tough spot. The Big Ten is no joke and the Cornhuskers are in bad need of a turnaround defensively after losing out on former DC Tony White. Chambliss will be a very big element of aid to Aurich being someone he can depend on and model what he wants done.

Chambliss has himself an opportunity there to make a leadership impact, but also won’t be held to the fire too much if the defense doesn’t dominate in Aurich’s first season. That’s not to say this promotion doesn’t come with pressure to perform on all sides because it very much does.

Jerry McClure

Up next is the exit of WR Jerry McClure who enters the portal from the SDSU program. McClure’s time on the Mesa is a complete head scratcher. A former 4 star recruit who originally signed to UCLA, McClure redshirted his one season in Westwood.

After joining the SDSU program much was hoped for the local standout to help remake a dysfunctional Aztecs offensive culture. The signing was a big feather in the cap to get more local wideouts on board and help get the Aztecs Fast brand poppin’ off. None of that was able to happen for McClure in his time and no one seems to know why? The 6’1″ 205 lb receiver looked the part out on the field in Fall camp this past season and got frequent reps with the 1’s & 2’s.

However his presence on the field seemed to disappear once the injuries to other WR’s Jacob Bostick and the arrival of Donovan Brown seemed to leapfrog his standing with the offense. When injuries seemed to plague the receiver unit late in the season and the passing game was completely anemic, McClure was again passed over by walk-ons and true freshman with not a single peep from the local media.

So far it appears San Jose State has offered McClure in the portal and this will be one to keep an eye on.

The Other Side of the Portal

There are a few other SDSU names that we’ve added below to the portal list, but some never played a down or are in their early years of development. And that brings us to the side of the portal we don’t like to talk about. Student-athletes being cut or more accurately asked to leave.

As much as we hate to see players like Trey White, Owen Chambliss, or Dwayne McDougle enter the portal and leave—there are a slew of others like a Jerry McClure, Mikey Welsh, and Kyle Crum who in all likely hood have been cut from the program.

Now let’s be clear, earning a scholarship never was designed as a contract for all years of eligibility. Student-athletes have not and are not employees of a University. They can be granted and taken away at most any moment.

But with the floodgates that have been opened when it comes to NIL and the forthcoming revenue sharing mechanisms, the lines between the two have been blurred forever. We won’t guess as to how many players from this 2025 SDSU roster were requested to enter the portal by the Aztecs program, but it’s fair to assume it is a size-able amount.

But don’t get us wrong, this is not an SDSU issue—this is a College Football issue. Fans across the country unfortunately need to rise up and be bigger than the leadership that is currently vacant in this sport. In the current landscape can you blame a young man for taking the bigger paycheck, knowing that perhaps a fellow teammate gives his blood, sweat, and body to a program faithfully only for his commitment to be revoked?
