Reports: San Diego State To Host Cal State Fullerton for November 2026 Matchup, Continuing Dominant Series Trend

While the transfer portal season is in full gear now, San Diego State men’s basketball has added another regional opponent to its 2026–27 non-conference slate, as the Aztecs are set to host Cal State Fullerton in an early-season matchup scheduled for either Tuesday, November 3 or Wednesday, November 4.

The news circulated this week via X:

According to the post citing public records requests from the schools, the game will come with a reported $90,000 guarantee paid to the Titans. This continues a common scheduling model that took place in which Mountain West programs bring in Big West opponents for home openers and tune-up opportunities ahead of conference play. SDSU looks to follow the same as they enter into the new Pac-12 this upcoming season.

The matchup renews a relatively recent series between the two Southern California programs, one that has been firmly controlled by San Diego State in recent years. The Aztecs have won each of the last three meetings dating back to 2021, including an 83–57 victory in the most recent contest in November 2023.

Cal State Fullerton is still seeking its first win in the series during this stretch, entering the 2026–27 meeting on a three-game losing streak against San Diego State.

Over the past three seasons, San Diego State has found success but also sliding backward in it’s attempts to build on the national momentum by its 2023 national championship game appearance. They’ve consistently posting 20-plus win seasons and remained one of the premier defensive teams in the country. But this year missed out on the NCAA Tournament.

The Aztecs have maintained a strong home-court advantage at Viejas Arena and have regularly scheduled regional opponents like Fullerton as part of a non-conference approach focused on balancing résumé-building games with manageable matchups.

Meanwhile, Cal State Fullerton has experienced more inconsistency, hovering around or below .500 in recent seasons. Trying to reestablish itself as a contender within the Big West, this matchup is a huge one for the Titans.

Their historical program record reflects that challenge, sitting below .500 all-time while making only a handful of NCAA Tournament appearances. Which doesn’t create much of a scheduling bump San Diego State needs to get back into the national conversation.

Heading into the 2026–27 season, San Diego State will always default to their defensive identity, but while their stability under head coach Brian Dutcher continues to be a defining factor, roster turnover across college basketball due to the transfer portal is a unique challenge this year.

On the other side, Cal State Fullerton enters the new season still searching for consistency after a 2025–26 campaign that included stretches of struggle in conference play, such as a 6–10 overall start and a 1–3 mark in the Big West early in league action.

This matchup does traditionally fit squarely into San Diego State’s formula for non-conference success: a regional opponent, a home-court advantage, and an opportunity to build momentum early in the year. For Cal State Fullerton, it’s a chance to challenge itself against one of the West Coast’s premier programs and potentially shift the narrative of a series that has recently been dominated by the Aztecs.
