A new college basketball experience is coming to San Diego. The National University Bill Walton Classic was announced Wednesday morning on the campus of Helix High school, the alma mater of the Hall of Fame big man.

The classic is set for November 7th , 2026 at Pechanga Arena, the site of the old San Diego Sports Arena where Walton was a fixture even after his playing days on the court for the NBA’s Trailblazers, Celtics and Clippers were complete.

“This isn’t just another event. It’s a night built for San Diego — a city where sports brings people together, and a hero worth celebrating every chance we get. When the lights come up at Pechanga Arena, we’re not just watching a game. We’re showing up for each other.” According to the event’s website https://billwaltonclassic.com/ the event aims to be more than a night of basketball.

There are two games set to be played on that Saturday—the first a women’s game between USD vs UCSD and the second a men’s game between San Diego State vs a team yet to be named. One can only speculate on who that mystery team could be. Will the event go hyper local and select another team like USD, UCSD, or Pt Loma Nazerene to face the Aztecs?

San Diego State currently has out of conference opponents set in the PlayersEra festival in Las Vegas, a home matchup vs Cal State Fullerton, the first home game in a two year series vs UNLV, and most recently announced a neutral game site in Palm Springs vs BYU in December.

The debate was spoken about this week about Coach Brian Dutcher’s strategy of scheduling his Aztecs program given the recent landscape changes in college basketball. Should he remain to schedule by aiming high and punch above their weight class, or add in more mid major opponents for higher likelihood of victories to build momentum on.

There really isn’t a right or wrong approach. San Diego State has benefitted by scheduling tough by putting themselves in elite company and spreading the brand across the world while collecting NIL dollars through the PlayersEra. But maintaining a balance of those mid major opponents is something that needs to be done with great care, as to not set yourself up for a trap game.

SDSU did not receive much benefit this past season of playing both Arizona and eventual National Champion Michigan earlier in the non conference schedule. The Aztecs lost to both in lopsided scores and neither game seemed to matter when it came to sharpening them up to perform better together in their conference season.

Though fans will definitely see how playing against UCLA, Walton’s alma mater would be a tremendous way to tip-off the first year, in the end the overall concerns of an Aztecs scheduling strategy shouldn’t be the main focus or the deciding factor on this inaugural game. This is about more than just one program.

With the recent passing of the basketball and San Diego legend Bill Walton, the event will be a dedication to his legacy and the basketball community he loved so much in San Diego County.

The event sounds like a great step in the direction of building up the San Diego basketball community by showcasing all programs, bringing together the various alumni & sports fans across town, all while honoring the life & legacy of a basketball icon—of which San Diego has far too few of. And let’s face it, Bill Walton embodied the fun, light, and spirit of a true San Diegan!
