No surprises came into play on Monday’s press conference when SDSU Head Football Coach Sean Lewis named redshirt freshman Stone Saunders as QB1 heading into this week’s preparation vs Washington State.
The Kentucky transfer played well in his SDSU debut on the road vs Colorado State where he threw for 369 yards on 23-33 completions, with 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.
Though the turnovers set SDSU’s chances of a comeback as improbable, Saunders displayed the kind of abilities Aztecs fans have been calling for this season.

Lewis detailed that Saunders had an excellent week of practice and preparation leading up to the road game. Saunders echoed how important each week’s test would bring and that he is up to the challenge.
Having the rushing duo of Lucky Sutton and Javion Kinnard is surely a veteran presence that has and should continue to ease the transition of QB1 play.
In addition having the wide receiver talent around him is counted as an asset in his confidence in letting it fly. The deep route came alive in the Aztecs offensive production against Colorado State in multiple open opportunities.
The next question for the Aztecs is wether Saunders and the offenses production last week was the result of playing against a lackluster Rams unit. CSU’s defense ranked near the bottom and had given up massive amounts of points in their four game losing streak.
But at this point naming Saunders the starter is the absolute correct decision to make. With 2/3’s of the season gone, Lewis & staff must know exactly what they have with Saunders at that position. The success to build upon each week must translate to both returning players for next season, as well as recruits banking on coming into an offensive system that will be developing playmakers.
For Saunders the time is now and the relationships he has with both Coach Lewis and OC/QB coach Matt Johnson are keeping his mind focused and committed to staying at San Diego State for the foreseeable future.
I trust them with my career. Saunders ended his press conference with a vote of confidence in his SDSU coaches.
