When the 2024 season was complete and the Aztecs put a sour punctuation on their 3-9 season, Brady Anderson had entered the transfer portal. His mind was made up that his final year of college football was going to be spent elsewhere.
The year had not gone as he had hoped—specifically Anderson was coming off the personal loss of his father in the off season, only to battle through frustrating injury after injury that hampered his minutes at the linebacker position. All of which was very difficult, especially when adjusting to a new head coach and defensive staff.
But then something happened. Something changed. Defensive edges coach Rob Auerich was promoted to Defensive Coordinator and new Linebackers coach. It seemed with that change came along with Brady exiting out of the transfer portal and coming back to the Mesa.
Brady Anderson now enters the 2025 season as a pivotal linebacker for the Aztecs—bringing a unique blend of special teams grit, defensive versatility, and veteran leadership. Anderson carved out a niche on special teams and is known as a “terrific blitzer” who can contribute across linebacker positions.
Though he only tallied one sack in 2024, his physical downhill style makes him an exciting chess piece off the edge or inside. With now this his final year of eligibility, there’s optimism his sack total could double or triple in 2025 as he takes on a bigger defensive role. Anderson will need to capitalize on increased playing time to make that bigger defensive impact.
Winning Aztecs seasons of the past have often relied on a multitude of defensive blitzers and special teams playmakers that truly made a difference. Regardless of the snaps on defense, Anderson truly has an opportunity to be that spark plug for this years team with his physicality and relentless motor.
Expect Anderson to take a step forward defensively, transitioning from special teams mainstay into a more consistent linebacker role. With starters graduating or moving on, he’s poised to earn more defensive snaps and align his performance with that blitzing upside. His physicality and effort in pursuit will be crucial as SDSU seeks to shore up its defense.
In the end, Brady Anderson embodies the hard-nosed spirit of the Aztecs. His workmanlike approach on special teams, coupled with emerging defensive promise, sets the stage for a breakthrough senior season. If he converts opportunities into consistent defensive production, Anderson could become a trusted force in Sean Lewis’s 2025 linebacker corps.
