We here at Sons of Montezuma are putting into focus our top San Diego State Aztecs football players for you to to know in the upcoming 2025 season. Next up is Wide Receiver, Jerry McClure.

Player: Jerry McClure

Position: Wide Receiver

Class: Redshirt Sophomore

Height/Weight: 6’1” / 200 lbs

Hometown: Chula Vista, California

Previous Schools: Mater Dei Catholic High School → San Diego State University

A year ago SDSU received the transfer of one of San Diego’s most talented receivers at the local high school level. Jerry McClure had won championships at Mater Dei (Chula Vista) and spent his freshman season in Westwood as part of a UCLA Bruins program. After making his return home to the Aztecs last season, Jerry now in his redshirt sophomore year is ready to step into the spotlight.

McClure enters the 2025 season as one of the Aztecs’ most intriguing rising weapons. He brings a dynamic skill set built on quickness, track level speed, and natural playmaking instincts. After flashing upside in limited reps during his redshirt and freshman campaigns, he’s now in position to take on a larger role and provide a spark to SDSU’s evolving passing game.

Standing at 6’1″ 200 lbs McClure has great size to be on the field in both pass catching and run blocking. Plus he has the speed that makes him tough to cover in one-on-one situations. With his 4-star pedigree out of high school and now in his second season on the Mesa, he should be developing that ability to create natural separation and give SDSU a reliable chain-mover in their desired routes.

McClure can line up both inside and outside, as well as in motion or stack formations. That versatility aligns well with the Aztecs’ offensive philosophy, which uses movement and tempo to create confusion for defenses.

Turning the corner as the season goes on, it will be interesting to see if McClure gets those opportunities to show what he can do and turn short passes into positive gains. Picking up extra yards after the catch, particularly on bubble screens, slants, and crossers will be key to get him going and open up the deep ball threat that he was in his prep days.

And that brings us to the only real question mark—the live game action experience at the D1 level is still not quite there. While he’s shown flashes in practice and limited game action, McClure still lacks the full game-to-game reps of more veteran players. Developing chemistry with the quarterback and proving consistency week to week will be key in elevating his role.

If he adjusts quickly to the increased tempo and physicality of the game, there’s no question McClure has the potential to lock in at the full-time starting role. McClure has a legitimate shot at becoming one of the team’s most productive receivers in 2025 if this new crop of quarterbacks can deliver the ball.

Jerry McClure may not be a household name yet—he reportedly declined to be an available player on the EA Sports College Football video game released last year due to the fact that he hasn’t earned his status and desired overall ranking to be worthy of a video game.

McClure may not have the ego, but he does have all the tools to become a breakout contributor in San Diego State’s new-look offense.
