We here at Sons of Montezuma are putting into focus our top San Diego State Aztecs football players for you to to know in the upcoming 2025 season. Next up is offensive lineman, Christian Jones.

Player: Christian Jones

Position: Offensive Tackle (Left Tackle)

Class: Senior

Height/Weight: 6’8” / 330 lbs

Hometown: San Luis Obispo, California

As San Diego State’s offensive identity continues to evolve under head coach Sean Lewis, an important figure in the team’s transformation is senior left tackle Christian Jones. The Aztecs offensive line that is expected to be the foundation for a revised up-tempo, spread-style attack, is going to need the big tackle this season.

Last season saw injuries, learning a new scheme, and inconsistencies from the unit under year one of AztecFast. With several new pieces meshing together up front and added depth, Jones’ role as the left tackle—the protector of the quarterback’s blind side—is not only critical but potentially defining for SDSU’s offensive success in 2025.

As a redshirt Jones has grown within the program as a long term Aztec Warrior. The 3-star rated big man has battled through coaching changes, scheme changes, and now as a senior he’s ready to fulfill that all around game in this offense.

He moves well laterally for his size and should have refined footwork in pass sets. He stays balanced through his kick-slide and does a solid job of mirroring edge rushers, allowing him to neutralize speed threats off the edge.

Listed at 6’8” and 330 pounds, Jones possesses an ideal tackle build. His long arms and strong upper body help him establish first contact and keep defenders at bay. His physical stature alone deters many speed rushers from engaging him head-on.

Jones has logged valuable playing time in the program and brings that maturity & preparation to the San Diego State locker room. As one of the elder statesmen on the offensive line, he’s expected to set the tone in the locker room and during in-game adjustments, especially with a unit that features multiple transfers and younger players.

Will that senior poise and technique give SDSU a reliable pass-blocking presence on the quarterback’s blind side? That is the question.

Jones has shown some inconsistency in drive blocking and engaging defenders at the second level. He’ll need to improve his pad level and finishing ability to thrive in SDSU’s zone-run concepts and perimeter stretch plays.

Although handling outside speed rushers may be the focus this season, it’s important for Jones not to occasionally be vulnerable to inside counter moves or delayed blitzes. Conditioning and rapid mental processing will be key to maximizing his effectiveness in this quick-paced scheme.

Jones should be locked in as San Diego State’s starting left tackle and will be expected to lead a restructured offensive line that features several experienced transfers, including Dallas Fincher and Tyler McMahan. His top priority will be keeping quarterback upright and giving the offense enough time to execute Lewis’ high-octane play designs.

With the Aztecs aiming to increase their passing volume and overall explosiveness, Jones will be leaned on to maintain consistent protection on the edge while also improving as a run blocker in outside zone looks and screen setups. His leadership will be instrumental in solidifying line chemistry and communication — two crucial components in a fast-paced offense.

If he can stay healthy and adapt fully to the tempo and demands of the system, Jones has the potential to be one of the Mountain West’s top linemen and a stabilizing force for the Aztecs.
