As spring football approaches Monday, March 22nd weekend for San Diego State, head coach Sean Lewis made one thing clear: the energy on the Mesa is real—but so is the urgency.
That sense of momentum reaches beyond football. Lewis pointed to a thriving athletic department as part of the program’s identity, highlighting success across multiple sports while the culture is continuing to be built internally.
“It’s awesome to have the great leaders that we do, the tremendous athletes that we have in the building each and every single day,” Lewis said.
But once spring ball begins, optimism quickly gives way to evaluation.
For Lewis, the next phase is about defining identity through competition and consistency. “To build a team, we got to figure out who we are,” he explained. “Now the rubber meets the road… guys earning a role.”
The roster may be loaded with raw athleticism, but Lewis emphasized that production will come down to daily habits. “I’m looking at who can consistently show up each and every single day,” he said. “Who’s going to learn from previous mistakes… and who’s going to work in the dark.”
That mentality is especially critical given the level of turnover across key position groups. From pass rushers to the secondary and offensive line, roles are wide open. “There’s some new guys that we’re very excited about,” Lewis said. “We got to refine their skills… and we got to go harass some quarterbacks.”
Even at quarterback, competition will define the spring. “Jayden’s going to get a lot of reps. Stone’s going to get a lot of reps,” Lewis noted about his returning starting QB Jayden Denegal and his transfer redshirt freshman Stone Saunders. “There’s going to be a great body of work that everyone’s going to be able to learn and grow from.”
Underlying it all is a ticking clock toward the season opener on September 5th vs Portland State. “We’re under 175 days until we kick off the season,” Lewis said. “So how are we going to invest this time? Are we just going to waste the time?”
That urgency reflects a program in transition—one balancing development, competition, and handling expectations coming off the heels of a successful season. As Lewis sees it, the foundation is already in place. “We have a lot of raw materials, a lot of great talent,” he said. “Now it’s about building the team.”
That broader vision—one that extends beyond spring practice—sets the stage for what comes next.
