We here at Sons of Montezuma are putting into focus our top San Diego State Aztecs football players for you to to know in the upcoming 2025 season. Next up is Linebacker, Owen Chambliss.

  • Name: Owen Chambliss
  • Position: Linebacker
  • Class: Sophomore
  • Height/Weight: 6’3″, 230 lbs
  • Hometown: Corona, California
  • Previous School: Utah

San Diego State linebacker Owen Chambliss enters the 2025 season as an intriguing component of the Aztecs’ defense. Standing at 6’3″ and weighing 230 pounds, the Corona, California native transferred from Utah last season.

Chambliss notched 31 total tackles in the 2024 season, with 16 being solo. He showed an ability to read plays and close gaps quickly which proved some good eyes the SDSU defensive staff had in bringing him over to the Mesa.

Chambliss’s versatility & athleticism held promise for his ability to be on the field in different defensive schemes. He has the capability in both run defense and pass coverage, with quick feet on the field.

And don’t let being an underclassman limit his importance, Chambliss earned first-team distinction during fall camp, highlighting his leadership qualities and commitment to being an Aztec Warrior.

There were some challenges however. Chambliss faced a bevy of injuries during the 2024 season, including a lower-body injury in spring drills and upper-body injury in season. Ensuring full recovery and maintaining health throughout the season will be crucial for his development and to what level of effectiveness this years defense can have.

If Chambliss can stay healthy, not only will his strength in tackling and coverage increase, but his impact in pass-rushing situations could really take his game up to the next level.

The staff is dedicated to Chambliss and he is expected to compete for his role as a starting linebacker and defensive leader. With the Aztecs aiming to rebound from a challenging 2024, Chambliss now has the ability to disrupt plays and mentor younger teammates as that guy who has ‘been through some things’ while coming out on the other side of it.

Owen Chambliss’s combination of athleticism, versatility, and leadership can make him an indispensable asset to the Aztecs. As the team prepares for the 2025 season, Chambliss’s on-field performance can be just the X-factor this defense needs to go from good to very special.
