SDSU Portal Tracker: Colorado Transfer DL Gavriel Lightfoot Signs New Beginning with the Aztecs

San Diego State has added a big man to help on the defensive line in 2026, Gavriel Lightfoot. Lightfoot is a name that some Mountain West football fans should be a bit familiar with. He spent his first three seasons at Fresno State and was heading to Colorado to play for Coach Prime in 2025. The big 6’3″ 300 lb lineman out of Moreno Valley, CA is anything but light.

Gavriel expected a big senior season making the transition to the Big12 conference. But when he tore his meniscus before the season started it was time to undergo surgery, rehab and hopefully get better before the season opener.

His meniscus began bothering him again and he feared it would be a chronic issue. After several setbacks he ended up having to pursue a medical redshirt. Lightfoot even documented much of his journey on his YouTube page which is an interesting watch for those of you looking to get to know the big man even more up close.

Gavriel is a high reward player to take a chance on, to say it mildly. His power, size, and run stuffing abilities at this mature stage of his college career can really help an Aztecs defense looking to continue where it left off last season. The SDSU defense improved in every statistical category last year and this pickup could help keep that standard.

But with a year away from actual game action it will be interesting to see to what level Gavriel is ready to compete at. Will he be ready to jump into coach Sobol’s conditioning full board or will the rust of being off for so long be a long journey.

Lightfoot played in 35 games and started 27 across three seasons at Fresno State. Lightfoot started as a true freshman on the interior defensive line for Fresno State—something that hadn’t happened in over two decades.

There he increased his tackle totals every year despite playing for two different head coaches, Jeff Tedford and Tom Skipper. Lightfoot played his high school ball at Centennial in Corona, CA, a program SDSU has looked to for strong football players and their impeccable winning culture.

This opportunity to reclaim the momentum Gavriel was building towards before the meniscus injury will be a must watch in Spring Camp for the Aztecs.
